Bishal Roka Magar
Director. Writer. Cinematographer
Bishal Roka Magar is a filmmaker from western Nepal, raised in the small city of Ghorahi. Fascinated by the magic of cinema, he began filmmaking with a DV tape camera, independently creating short films and organizing local screenings. In 2012, one of his short films reached millions of views on YouTube, opening doors to self-learning, film festivals, and international exposure. He later attended workshops with Murray Kerr and Dov S-S Simens.
With a Bachelor's degree in Sociology (BA), Bishal's work is rooted in lived realities, memory, migration, conflict, culture, identity, and the unseen lives of communities. He gained recognition through Gurkha Girl, which won the Debut Director Award at Film Southasia 2022 and Best Documentary at the Nepal International Film Festival (NIFF), while screening at numerous international festivals. Alongside documentaries, he has directed short films, music videos, and feature film projects, many of which are available on the Black Sulpa Production YouTube channel.
